A brain injury may be the worst injury a person can suffer. Severe forms of brain injuries, such as traumatic brain injury, can result in permanent neurobiological and structural damage that can produce lifelong deficits in a variety of ways.

These deficits include cognition, psychological health, speech and language, sensory perception, and the ability to get through everyday activities that many take for granted. Even milder forms of brain injuries, such as a concussion, can cause substantial difficulties or impairments that can last a lifetime.

By working with experienced personal injury lawyers at Halunen Law, traumatic brain injury victims can trust that their rights and interests are protected.

Brain Injuries Are Common and Devastating

More than 5 million Americans live with disabilities resulting from a brain injury, more than 100,000 of which are Minnesotans.

We have all heard about widely publicized instances of those in the military, the NFL, or other professional sports suffering from repeated concussions. In fact, Minnesota Twins baseball players Corey Koskie and Justin Morneau had their careers cut short due to head injuries that occurred on the field.

However, many brain injuries may also occur in more common events, such as car accidents, falls or premises liability accidents, youth sports injuries, or bicycle accidents. Each year, more than 500,000 people go to hospital emergency rooms with bicycle-related injuries—about 350,000 of these individuals are children under age 15. Of those children, about 130,000 sustain brain injuries.

Unfortunately, these head injuries can often go untreated and leave the brain very susceptible to additional and amplified injury.

Despite the potential lifelong deficits after a head injury, insurance companies still frequently take the position that the impact wasn’t hard enough to cause a concussion or that all mild traumatic brain injuries heal within 4-6 weeks. That simply is not true. And having a personal injury to fight for you can make all the difference.
