Panacryl sutures lawsuit investigation - Ethicon’s Panacryl sutures may be causing infections
Panacryl sutures were marketed as absorbable sutures that, until recalled from the market in 2006, were used to help support internal wounds after surgery. These braided synthetic sutures were supposed to be absorbed by the body and never removed. Panacryl sutures were used primarily in lower abdominal surgeries (i.e., c-sections, tummy tucks, and colo-rectal procedures, to name a few)
Panacryl sutures were manufactured by Ethicon Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson, and were recommended for intensive surgeries, such as abdominal surgeries, as being unique for their combined superior strength and absorbability. Ethicon stated that Panacryl sutures were useful where extended wound support was needed for up to six months.
Panacryl sutures did not dissolve in many patients. Often, additional surgeries were required to remove the infected sutures. Recovery times for patients suffering complications were as long as two years. IN some cases, the sutures remained inside the patient’s body for xix months before the granulomas and/or infections occurred. Most of the problems with the Panacryl sutures are associated with its use in the lower abdominal region, commonly referred to as “soft tissue” areas.
Panacryl sutures were introduced to the market in 1999 and Ethicon stopped selling the Panacryl suture in July 2002. Panacryl sutures were not recalled from the market until 2006, despite Ethicon’s own medical director urging it to do so as early as 2002.
